At the Dawn of an Era: A Victorian Era "Mod" | W.I.P

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

“And so it was the the Dawn of an Era, where as some nations may find there place in the sun, others would simply fall into darkness”

Scenarios and Mods involving the famous 1830~ start date are pretty common, but even so, I wanted to try my hand at it. Being sincere, I’m posting this W.I.P since I’ve already lost all my progress once, and recently half of it too, so for it to not be another dead project, I wanted to at least show it, and search for some help on the forum.

Anyway, getting back on track, one of the objectives of this so called mod was to “cover” the number of uncolonized/neutral provinces that appeared on most Victorian Age scenarios, and so with this, one could prevent the “Implausable colonizers”, (such as having early Qing colonies on the coast of Africa, or vice-versa, provinces that should be colonized being barren of any owner until really late on the game, such as provinces on the middle of North America), but most importantly, to give the possibility to the player to play as obscure but historical states or people’s which weren’t represented already on the game, this counts specially for regions such as Southern Africa, the Patagonian region, the Caucasus, Indonesia, Central Asia, etc.

So with this in mind, the player has more options on how to play the game, changing a little bit the structure for colonization, etc.

Implemented Features:

  • -New flags for various nations
  • -270+ New Nations (and counting!)
  • -Alternative flags and name for different ideologies of a nation (Example: "Tigray" being "Lordship of Tigray" as a monarchy or the "Tigray People's Democratic Republic" with the socialist ideology).
  • More and revamped formable nations.

Planned Features:

  • More nations (since there's still incomplete parts of the world such as India or Central Africa).
  • A new type of ideology: "traditional state", specially designed for states which aren't tribal, but still have a chiefdom type of organization.
  • Changes on the name of some things: "Vassal state" to "Satellite State", etc.
  • Change the name of "Diseases", to represent "Situations", depending on the year. (Ex: "minor nationalist uprising" starting on 1844 or  "medium labour strike", etc).
  • More Scenarios [ *Just ideas, probably not all of them* ]: "The revolutions of 1848", "The Crimean War(1853)", "1857", "1860", "Winds of Unification: 1865", " La Belle Époque (1871)", "1879", "The Great Scramble(1884)", "Sino-Japanese war: 1894", "1900", "Administrative divisions of 1900", "Moroccan Crisis: 1905". [There could be scenerios up to 1939, but with this ideas is probably more than enough for now].
  • New UI.
  • More provinces and , wishfully, a new map background.
  • Events (not for all scenarios though).

Thanks for reading all of this.

LITTLE UPDATE: SHOWCASE OF FLAGS FROM THE NEW INDONESIAN TRADITIONAL STATES!

I've made some progress on various kingdoms of the east indies. Some of them will start as "vassals"/"satellite states" of the Dutch East Indies, representing their relation with the netherlands as "princely states".

The chart you see below, contains the varied states that compose this area, dividing them into their different corresponding regions. (Keeping in mind that this will make sense when I showcase the distinct formable nations of the area). A "fun fact", that i didn't include on the chart is that, most of them have alternative names for their ideologies, for example:

Uncertain("Standard"/"Generic"): Pontianak   ;   Monarchy: Pontianak Sultanate   ;   Monarchism: Kesultanan Pontianak   ;   etc

I want to also clarify that even if I tried to mantain the flags historical, I also took some "artistic liberty" while making some of the ones corresponding to different ideologies for the nations.this post, and let me know if you like this kind format for showcasing the different flags and features of this scenario/mod !

Thanks for the information! And to answer your questions:

1. Unfortunately, the scenario/mod is still a "Work In Progress"(hence the "W.I.P" tag). As much as I want to release it, it would feel awkward to launch an incomplete project, but at the same time, I don't want it to become another dead mod from the bunch here (that's the reason for why it's on the scenario section...in case I won't be able to complete all the objectives I set upon myself, and so release it just as an scenario with extra civs). I'll try to release it "soon™️", but to state a definitive date would be for the most part risky and could end in disappointment.

2. I've actually looked into it before, you can see my "incursion" into South American history on the Patagonian part, but excluding most of that last part, the whole region needs at least some polishment if not a rework (I was working on it, but funnily enough, my efforts somehow went diverted somehow to Zimbabwe and Namibia hahaha) . On the topic of Argentina, It's really difficult to pinpoint some things from the period, especially with the "civil war" between the Federales and Unitarios raging across the Argentinean Confederation, but to my understanding (I could be completely wrong in this), Buenos Aires wasn't de jure independent until 1852, on the other hand, it was "semi-independent" de facto, as being part of the "Pacto Federal" (with the "provinces" of Corrientes, Entre Rios, Santa Fé, etc), during the "interregnum" and the civil war. In the end, I thought of two options: Letting it be independent, into an alliance consisting of the previously mentioned "Pacto Federal" or just setting a big Argentinian Confederation with really low stability and the different provinces as cores waiting to rebel. Thinking what could be more appropriate to an scenario with no events (for now?), could be very difficult if one wants to evade a balkanized version of Argentina, with a high number of provinces "battling It out" (more troublesome if the Unitary alliance wins, but remains just as an alliance of separate states).

Moving to the answer of the next topic: about the Gran Chaco, we can circle it out to "lack of work into it". On one hand, I've tinkered into the idea of including some native states on the zone (one of the reasons I started the work on this mod was that I found the original Victorian scenario as somehow lacking representation of the people's present onto the "uncolonized" provinces), on the other hand, even if I've been able to find some info of this region, the lack of some flags or simply the difficulty of the things on relation of what one could call a state, tribe, etc, have really set back my efforts, as just sticking a "wiphala" for the Bolivian part of the region would be disrespectful to the inhabitants of the region (specially with them identifying more with the Patujú Flower flag), or just sticking a big Guaraní/Ava state latching all of the "subdivisions" between them would be the same, while at the same time, I have to admit that it could work as a placeholder, and solve the thing later, or I could just take and artistic liberty type of deal, and just invent a flag, taking some piece of art of their culture or part of a photograpy of the group.

To finish this rambling, and reducing it to a simple answer: I need to dig deeper into the information, and try to find solutions, especially with comments like yours!

LITTLE UPDATE: SHOWCASE OF FLAGS FROM THE UNFEDERATED MALAY STATES OF "BRITISH MALAYA"!

A collection of kingdoms of the malay penninsula. Being put in the middle of the growing influence of the British Empire on the area while at the same time some of them starting the game as satellites to the Rattanakosin Kingdom of Siam. The struggle for the dominion of this region could even mean the future for the domination of South East Asia.

british-malaya-1-unfederated-states.png

So, here they are. The different "unfederated" states of Malaya. I've decided to confect a variety of flags for different ideologies for the nations, trying to keep a balance on keeping them "historicaly accurate", mantaining some cultural elements or simply the given meaning of them, keeping them as being able to "stand-out"/keeping the "rule of cool", and being wary of copyng victoria 2 too much on the made up flags (especially relevant for HFM). The previous "personal" rules are important not only for the flags of this area, but for most of the ones present on the mod.

Another note for this post is that, originally I was going to post the second part of the chart, which includes the Federated Malay States, and the different Colonial flags for the different British settlements (and maybe I would also craft flags for alternate colonies, such as Dutch or Portuguese Malacca?). But in the end, a mix of university work and perfectionism, since the amount of flags wasn't enough for me at least to be able to present, I ended up deciding on posting it later (probably on the weekend), but as this part of the chart is ready,  there wouldn't be a problem on presenting it. Thanks for reading my rambling again.

When you're gonna release this quite awesome scenario? Will you release as an a.p.k.?

The scenario doesn't have a release date for now, but I want to release it 'soon' at least as a beta (I want it to be a mod in the future, but obviously, I wanted to start it as an scenario, in case I'm only able to complete that part of it). I've been a little occupied with university and the fact that the version of the mod I was working with got bugged, so I have to go back to a previous working backup of it (meaning that I have to add again all the civs I've made, their colors, formable nations, etc)...So after fixing that setback, I'll probably post more images of the scenario and it's progress.

I really want to make an --- version, and even tried my hand onto making a beta-version of it, but for now, I can't make it work. It's probably a fault of my ignorance into things such as signing --- files or maybe I skipped an step of the process without realising it. In the end, the answer is YES, but first i need to finish the PC version, and to understand how do porting the mod for android works.

On the other hand, I want to thank @ezeD for correcting me about some parts of the Gran Chaco region of South America. I've given it some work, and started the confection of some flags for the different indigenous people's populating it at the time. I tried to atleast keep the flags somewhat related to the identity of the different groups, basing them of iconography, or different logos of existing communities  corresponding to the traditional states (Some flags are more 'fantasy' than others, since finding information about some of them was reaaally dificult. I've probably spent a good amount of time into the search of some of them). Most of the civilizations from the 'Great Chaco'  have ended up with in between two or three different flags for this scenario.

A progress list of the people's/'civs' from the 'Gran Chaco'/'Great Chaco':

 *Flags ready:

  • Ava Guarani ('Chiriguanos').
  • Simba Guarani ('Simbas').
  • Izoceños ('Chanes').
  • Huarpe (Millcayac).
  • Guanacache (Huarpes Guanacaches).
  • Ayoreo.
  • Totobiegosode (Ayoreos Totobiegosode).
  • Nivacle ('Chulupies')

 *Still in work:

  • Mocoví.
  • Wichi.
  • Pilaga.

*Planned, but probably won't make it to the final version:

  • Different variaton of the Qom/Toba communities.
  • Diaguita (variation from the Chaco).
  • Manjui.
  • Chiquitano.
  • Mojos (Moxos/'Mojeños').

For now that's my progress of this area. I also finished recently the differents kingdoms of the Federated Malay States, and I'm deciding if I should include the different British territories that are part of the 'Straits Settlements' as releasable civs (Colony of Malacca, Colony of Singapore and the Colony Penang).

Thanks for reading, and I'm again, grateful for your suggestions, comments and messages of support for this project. I know I left it abandoned for a while, but it was mostly because of lack of time (university and personal things regarding this quarantine really took most of it), but i'll try to be more active. I once again want to thank anyone for reading this rambling of mine, and if someone wants to help by any means (being it suggestions or anything), feel free to let me now here below.

LITTLE UPDATE: SHOWCASE OF FLAGS FROM THE FEDERATED MALAY STATES OF "BRITISH MALAYA"!

Another collection of kingdoms of the malay penninsula. Will one of them be able to unify the Federated Malay States into a centralized state, be it to ally with the British, or to gain independence from them.

british-malaya-2-federated-states.png

I really liked how this chart turned out. I tried to bring into the table a moderate amount of flags for different ideologies, based on existing flags or different cultural elements of the civilizations. This is a little update, and I apologize for being late, since I said i'd post it around two weeks ago. If you want to critizice them or correct me, don't hesitate to do it below, and again, I thank you for reading this information about my little-big project.

  • Added Huarpe people to the south.
  • Fixed the starting name of the "Calfucura Domain (Cacicazgo of Salinas Grandes)" to be called "Kallfucura Domain" (The name also changes depending of it's ideology).
  • Added the "Unitarian League" to represent the "Liga del Interior", the unitary-liberal goverment of the "interior provinces" during the second unitarian-federal war.
  • Changed the flags of Entre Rios to fit more with the year of the start date.

*" Posponed, Cut or Scrapped content":

  • The Diaguita culture, the 'Comechingones', 'Moxos', and other cultures didn't make the cut for this version. Maybe in a future version of it they could seem feasable.
  • The province of Buenos Aires is for now represented as the Argentine Confederation per se, having the rest of the Federal provinces as vassals.
  • Argentina should be formable by any of the different Argentine governments/provinces, but for now, the formable nation hasn't been implemented.
  • I added "misiones" as a nation (in between Paraguay and the Riograndense Republic), but i'm not sure if it should exist at this moment of time.

* Fun Facts (?):

  • Almost all indigenous nations have a "nationalist" flag.
  • I still haven't fixed the technology levels of the different civilizations.
  • While adding the different nations of the Great Chaco, I erased the cores of South Peru, so they aren't visible in the screenshot.
  • For now, the Argentine Confederation and the Unitarian League don't start at war, but with relations under -60.

I thank you all for reading this sort of 'changelog'. And I wanted to state that, I finally fixed my "modded" version of the game (Now without crashing during the first turn!), and added a good amount of progress that was lost (Mostly entering the civ information into the game editor, for them to show up in the game).I also wanted to say that this project isn't dead (For Now at least!). If I made a mistake, just correct me under this topic.

During this week I'll probably post more info about the next part I'm "fixing", The Provinces of British North America

British North America: Western Provinces of Canada.

Canada at the time of the start date of this scenario, wasn't exactly what one could call an "united" country, nor even colony, but a collectcion of different colonial possesions, under british suzerainty. Some where previously french colonial possetions, that still mantain those french traditions, others are territories under a 'private company' that mantains the 'order' under the area, and others took repercutions from the american revolutionary war, such as being more loyalist to the english crown, or preparing themselves to take inspiration from their southern neighbor and become a republic.

Since the act of union was passed after 1840, The Province of Canada is still divided under the "Province of Lower Canada" and "Province of Upper Canada".

Age-of-Civilizations-II-Canada1.png

*Changes:

  • Added new civilizations: Lower Canada, Upper Canada, The Hudson Bay Company, etc.
  • Added a lot of flags for those civilizations, specially for Lower and Upper Canada, based on the revolutions of 1837.
  • Cape Breton (In Nova Scotia) and The Northwest Company (For the HBC),  added as releasable nations.
  • Name changes for the different ideologies of the nations, based upon their current names as provinces, previous denominations of their territory, or cultural traits (example: French name for the Republique of Bas-Canada, or Gaelic for Alba Nuadh).

* "Still working on it":

  • Searching for an historically accurate flag for the "Oregon Territory" (Probably going to use the "Colony of British Columbia" flag and/or ensign), or searching ways to represent the territorial conflict for it (The territory of New Caledonia, The Oregon County dispute, etc). [Probably, it's going to end up as uncolonized land, with some native tribes).
  • Searching a way to represent the "Metis Nation" (I'm still not sure if they should appear at the start date or count as a releasable nation).
  • Cores for the USA for some places(?)
  • Talking about the USA...Maybe also subdivide it's territories, such as the Michigan Territory or Arkansas Territory.

Anyway, that's it for now. Thanks for reading. Correct me if I'm wrong about anything I put in the map if you'd like to.

I forgot to post this screenshot of the Celebes and other islands containing the indonesian princely states.
Also, Thanks for the 1830 views of this  scenario/mod! I know that I haven't announced an official release date, but I hope to finish it soon for the enjoyment of the community :)

Any updates for this mod?

Yes, It took some time, but is coming right up!

North American West Coast: Indigenous People of The Pacific Northwest:

As I previously mentioned, the territories of the Northwest Plains and Pacific Coast weren’t under a single government during the start date of the scenario, but under the power struggle of British and American expansionism, being the zone known either as the “Columbia District” or “Oregon Country”, but to be fair, the territory wasn’t exactly a barren wasteland where the two world powers previously mentioned could just expand declare governance, as different People’s already inhabited those lands, and who other could be other than a plethora of distinct Native American nations. Who then will be victorious in this power struggle? Maybe the British will finally take control of the maximum extent of the Columbia District, Or the United States shall again govern over the West Coast, but not without a good amount of Native and American blood spilled under the Yakima, Puget Sound and countless other wars between the two worlds…Or shall the different Salish Nations unify and defy the expansionism coming from the East…Even a competition for expansion between the British Hudson Bay Company (That already operates and negotiates inside this territories) and the Russian American Company (which too owns forts and claims inside the region)…Maybe Mexico will finally stabilize and expand over Californian Territories, claiming their hereditary claims from Spain, previously known as the Nootka Territory.

Is up to the player and the consequences of the actions of the AI inside the game to decide the fate of this lands!

          Salish Releasable:

Age-of-Civilizations-II-Salish-2.png

*Changes:

  • Added More Nations: They range from different cultures and ethnic groups. Their flags are either based on already existing flags and icons used by their respective reservations, art depictions, reconstructions of black and white or low quality photos of previous known flags, or just artistic liberty for some.
    • 20 New Starting Nations: All native tribes from British Columbia, and the States of Washington and Oregon.  From the different Salish Nations such as the Muckleshoots, Chehalis or the famous Suquamish (of one of whom's leader gave the name to the city of Seattle), the Snohomish who inhabit the Puget Sound, The more northern Tinglit, The Sahaptian speaking Yakama, or the different Chinook at the south.
    • 4 Releasable Nations: Being the Haisla,  Duwamish, Snohomish and Salish (for the las one, being the tribe version of the nation).
    • 1 New Formable Nation - The Salish Nation: Since the ethnic-linguistic group compresses most of the nations added, it only seemed fair to include it as a formable nation. With 18 new flags, most of them taking artistic liberties to be fair, it complies the idea of a unified Salishan state, be it in the form of (for example):
      • Salish (Republic and Generic Flag):     salish.png.42a93321342b43ff06ce49bc3f365701.png
      • Salish Sea Socialist Republic (Communist):           salish_c.png.302cf9e7f1bedbdb944fcf1679183c20.png
      • Salish Socialist Republic (Socialist):   salish_q.png.f2f6c17db9077ef0900a7cbd5b3591c2.png
      • Salish Chiefdom (Monarchism) :                                2123391699_salish_.png.d1be657fb96085c9fa196b2ae86ba6c0.png
      • Salishan Sea Authority (Fascism):      salish_f.png.83a0e15cacd93acc05e39c42e73dc389.png
      • Salishan State (Ultranational-Socialism):                  salish_!.png.a3c3f5e17563fa8de00b5de190671a90.png
      • And more...

*Miscellaneous Facts:

  • There was originally two more formable nations that were scrapped, the Chinook and the Haida-Tinglit Union. Both were scrapped since they don't have much room to work with the respective flags.
  • At first I said that the native nations weren't exactly my 'cup of tea' as a way to solve the "Oregon/Columbia dispute", since looking for territories, flags, correct names, and specially, for the representation to not be offensive, becomes a tedious process. In the end, it felt bad to do it only with areas of Africa and to be fair, it all worked out in the end ... but i'll probably leave most native nations areas as there already are for the first relaease, since they take a looot of effort.
  • In the future, the PNW territory will probably have more releasable nations, such as Oregon, Cascadia, British Columbia, Vancouver, The Jefferson State, Etc. But since this edition was based mostly around the topic of Native American nations, I'll deal with those civilizations later.
  • Some nations flags where specialy difficult to reconstruct or find, such as the Suquamish (Republic Government), or the Nuxalk (Both the Generic flag and the Nationalist Government flag).
  • Ahousaht and Nuu Cha Nulth civilizations are the only ones that don't have at least a second flag. I apologize for this since it was very difficult at first to find this nations flags before getting my way into it.
  • After this part is finshed, I shall finally finish with the Orissa states...one of the last parts of the scenario that need changes (the others, in order of importance are: The middle and northern Princely States of India, The middle part of the USA,  Some flags for different German States such as Hanover and Waldeck-Pyrmont, and maybe some more releasable nations).
  • I NEED to FIX the TECHNOLOGY LEVELS of the scenario.
  • ...I NEED to learn how to port mods to an android a.p.k. file.

Well, that's it for now...The updates will be even more scarce than before, since University doesn't leave me with much free time to work in this... and since this is a sort of "Solo-Project", in the end I'm the only one working on it thus making progress even slower. But I'll try my best to at least release somewhat before this year end, hopefully with a finished and polished product. Thanks again for reading this (if you made it this far!), and I hope for anyone to just tell me if there's any problem or error in my historical representation, or if you have a comment/suggestion to give me!

THE WORLD MAP SO FAR:

The Region of Odisha and It's Princely States:

The region of Odisha, or at the times of the start date of this scenario, Orissa, was composed of a recollection of different princely states which operated under a sort of "semi-independent rule" under the suzeranity of the British East India Company, and subsequent British Raj. The Region itself has a unique identity (but to be fair, most regions of the indian subcontinent have a very unique culture, if they are compared with each other), but that culture is slowly deteriorating after the different external rules the area has passed through (Bengal, Mughal and Maratha), summed up with the British policy of "divide and rule".

This is a small update, but technically important, since the Orissa Tributary States didn't join the Indian Rebellion of 1857, so most of them continued their rule until 1946.

  • Added 4 Starting Nations: Kalahandi, Bamra, Dhenkanal and Mayurbhanj
  • Added 8 New Releasable Nations: Patna, Boudh, Sonepur, Pal Lahara, Keonjhar, Kharsawan and Seraikella.
  • All added nations have a british "Red Ensign" flag (either for monarchist or conservatism governments. Some have two distinct Red Ensigns, using either the state or prince's emblems).

  • Eventually, I should prepare "Orissa" itself as a formable nation, but i'm not sure if I should just transfer the flags from "Victoria 2" for it.

Well, this update took a long time, since I'm really occupied with University work, and all things related.

Princely States are other one of those really hard topics, especially considering their borders, the game's map borders, etc.

I also wanted to say that I'm currently using this map to guide mysfelf through the process of it. (the map is in Spanish, but It shouldn't be too difficult to understand for someone who doesn't speak the language). I never really mentioned my sources, but other than wikipedia, for this one they would be worldstatesmen.org, indianrajputs.com, rbvex.it (for quality renditions of some of the flags), among others I can't really remember right now.

This is the 1946 scenario I created.  It has events and allows you to have large armies (over 1 mil if your playing as Germany) to make it more realistic.  This alternate history scenario is planned to have at least 15 events.
