So there's a new grand strategy game in the works called Grey Eminence. Apparently some of the devs from the MEIOU and Taxes team have been working on this for a long time, and have just announced it yesterday. The game is said to have a map with a whopping 1,000,000 TILES. (Compare that with AoH2 having 4,000 provinces or the old HoAoH2 having ~17,000.)  The game is also made with moddability in mind; the game's description mentions a built-in world editor and the ability to "alter virtually any feature in the game".

So what do you think? Is Grey Eminence the next step after AoH? M&T is a high quality mod... We'll see where this project goes. May this game be spared from reaping.

So I'll write down everything I know about Grey Eminence here. I'm collecting info from the team's dev diaries, as well as their Discord server.

  • The map is made up of 1,004,880 hexagonal tiles (and 12 pentagonal tiles)
  • Each tile has its own population, buildings, and geography, which are tied to many systems including demographics modelling, production, consumption, trade, climate, and more
  • Grey Eminence is built on the idea of simulationism; the systems in the game "represent the phenomena that drove mankind towards modernity as faithfully as possible"
  • Each and every country in the game has several groups of "elites" competing for power: the nobility, clergy, merchants, military, and even the state bureaucracy can influence your country's decisions
  • The estates are also made up of characters, each with their own personality, history, ambitions, and fears
  • Many core systems in the game will function even without player intervention; it might take 600 years for you to build a farm, but the nobility can still act during that timeframe
  • Grey Eminence has virtually no hardcoded mechanics. Everything can be modified, from the UI, to the AI, to the graphics, to even the core system logic
  • The base game will include a built-in world editor, the same one that is being used to set up the default 1356 "scenario" (the devs refer to it as a "game world" in the diary)
  • Grey Eminence is able to store so much data because it utilizes Unity’s Data-Oriented Technology Stack, which you can read about here
  • As of the first dev diary, the game is at least a year away from a full release

That was from the dev diary. Now for the Discord:

  • Less common and less traditional ideologies are very likely to be in the game (e.g. anarchism, libertarian socialism, and theocracy)
  • The map tiles are "not infinitely small, but much smaller than EU4 provinces"
  • Events are hardcoded to specific conditions rather than a specific year, allowing for emergent gameplay
  • There are formable nations. A lot of formable nations.
  • Technologies aren't gated by year, so local factors are part of the equation that comes with their invention/spread
  • Nothing stops you from modding in technology farther than 1956; there's a specific reason the devs chose to stop there, which will be revealed in a future dev diary
  • In regards to guerrilla warfare and localized conflicts, a dev said "total war isn't the only form of conflict in the game"
  • There are wasteland tiles, but they're "a lot more interactive than you'd think"
  • It may be possible to connect two tiles from a large distance for troop movement (think of AoH's "Move To")
  • The world editor will include importers for maps you want to model in-game, and exporters to share whatever you create
  • Countries are very customizable; far beyond what was possible in M&T
  • The terrain will be dynamic in terms of deforestation and clearing jungles
  • As of now, only the 1356 scenario has been set up
  • Mechanics will change across time periods
  • Efforts have been made to represent the rise of private capital (and not just banks)
  • Tiles are grouped into provinces; you can interact with provinces or individual tiles (and yes, country territory can change tile-by-tile)
  • A tile (in the base game) is always 510km², but what's in the tile can change
  • You can choose between a hexagonal map mode or an organically shaped map mode

So yeah. That's Grey Eminence in a nutshell. Every Tile Independent mod when?

No, this is just different overall, nowhere near the next step of Aoh.

Anyway if this game came to Android it will Burn mi Phone Instantly.

Stop comparing Aoh games to paradox games or other grand strategy games, aoh2 is just un unfinished game, but even if moddable the game mecanichs are just very bad
