All religions have moral authority, depending on the control of sacred places (five provinces that are sacred for one religion or another, some of them “separate” two different religions, and only one can control, which spurs wars), the numbers and titles of believers, victories in holy wars and crusades. A religion with high moral authority is readily adopted by all districts and is accepted by other rulers. In this way, you can shake up some religion that is of little significance in reality and discover how all your neighbors accept it in the hope of protection. A religion with low moral authority is not respected, it is reluctantly accepted, and most importantly, it gives rise to heresies among some religions.

Reforming religion

 

Reforming a pagan religion involves creating a church hierarchy and sacred texts - borrowing the basic elements of the Abrahamic religions in order to more effectively endure them. In game terms, Reformed Pagans no longer have the restrictions on authoritative crowns, succession, Revolutionary Wars, and Conversions that regular Pagans do.

 

Since reformation, a religion has a head who adds 20% to its moral authority and who can (after Crusades and Jihads have been unlocked) declare Great Holy Wars. The ruler who reforms high Germanic paganism becomes a Filkir, a duke-level secular ruler similar to the caliph in Islam. Other pagan religions, when reformed, receive a religious leader at the level of a duke, who becomes the leader of the reformer, who formed their religious ruler by analogy with the patriarch in Orthodoxy.

 

When a religion is reformed, the rulers who adhere to its religion can choose whether to change the religion to its new form or not. Those who continue to believe in the old way, the scientist as a heretic and can become the target of a holy war.

 

Requirements

 

Reforming a religion costs 750 piety. You also need to control three sacred sites and have at least 50% moral authority, or simply control all five sacred sites. If the last two are difficult to take over, then the best way to achieve 50% moral authority is to capture new counties and raids. Each temple looted during a raid adds 1% to the moral authority of the religion.

 

Please note that German pagans consider Brunswick a sacred place, but its capture will unlock the Crusades for Catholics, as well as the formation of knightly orders, except for the Hospitaller Order . Catholics can immediately launch a campaign in response to the capture, although the preferred target would be Hungary, if it exists.

 

Advantages

 

Reformed pagans receive a bonus to conversion speed. If their religion has a high moral authority and a rival religion has a low one due to sacred sites being captured and destroyed, or if they control the lands of unreformed pagans, then they will quickly be inundated with reports that the lands of their vassals have been converted, making serious efforts to spread new religion.

 

Reformed Pagans gain access to Holy Wars, which can target members of any religion (including other Pagans), and Greater Holy Wars, where Catholics and Muslims unlock Crusades and Jihads. The Germanic Filkirs can declare Great Holy Wars on any state even if they do not have a common border, but in this case only on the condition that this state has access to the sea. Greater Holy Wars have a cooldown to prevent them from being used continuously. Holy Wars and Greater Holy Wars can be used against holders of higher titles compared to standard Pagan CBs, providing more opportunities to attack Catholic or Muslim kingdoms (except Tengrism, which initially provides the ability to attack kingdoms).

 

Reformed pagans can raise the authority of the crown to any level. They gain access to all standard laws of succession (elective monarchy, seignorate, primogeniture and minorate).

 

Flaws

 

Reformed Pagans lose the attrition bonus to enemy troops and will suffer attrition in the lands of unreformed Pagans, except those who adhere to the old form of their religion. Scandinavian rulers lose their bonus to guard size and begin to receive penalties for raising vassal militia, just like everyone else.

 

Reformed pagans lose the Casus beli "Submission" - the fastest way to expand. Access to the County Capture Incident and raids remains.

 

Reforming a religion causes a split - the ruler who reformed the religion converts to its new form, as do his direct vassals, but for others, the choice of religion is random (except for the player, who is given the right to choose himself). Followers of the old religion receive a -35 penalty to relations with followers of the new one. If the ruler remains faithful to the old religion, and the majority of his vassals switch to the new one, then numerous one-time uprisings can occur. Expect frequent raids and wars between states that have accepted the new faith and those that have not.

Strategy

 

Reforming a religion increases stability and provides the ability to declare war on targets larger than those that can attack unreformed pagan states, but it loses many of the benefits that help small pagan states expand faster and defend against larger neighbors. It is better to carry out reforming when the player is “ripe” to move from aggressive expansion to the need to maintain the created empire.

Because of this, it is usually advisable to avoid reforming your religion until your kingdom has grown to include several kingdoms, and to make sure you use the Conquest CB on everyone you want to conquer before reforming your religion.
