Some interesting heresies:

  • Fraticelli (from Catholicism): allows you to have an alternative Pope. Not the anti-pope (that is, the contender for the title of pope), but the second pope. The Fraticelli Pope is equated to a duke, and not to a king, which means that a king, and not just an emperor, can vassal him. If the Fraticelli heresy overcomes conventional Catholicism, the Fraticelli pope becomes universally recognized as the real pope.
  • Iconoclasm (from Orthodoxy): a kind of Orthodox analogue of fraticelli, only with a pocket patriarch. Notable for being the only strong heresy at the start of the game (earliest date) - the Emperor of Byzantium follows this heresy as does the iconoclastic patriarch. Thus, at this start, Iconoclast very often takes precedence over Orthodoxy even without active player actions, which is unique.
  • Bogomilism (from Orthodoxy): the Orthodox analogue of Catharism, does not allow female feudal lords, but allows female priests. It has no patriarch.
  • Messalianism (from Nestorianism): the most shocking heresy of all, perhaps. Not only does Catharism allow for equal rights for women, but it also prescribes incest! In addition, according to real history, this heresy worshiped Lucifer as a good angel, which adds even more shocking points to him. The most convenient thing is that only the Nestorians (very few) consider them heretics, and for other Christians these freaks are simply heterodox with whom one can maintain normal relations. In addition to this, thanks to the initial weakness of the Nestorian faith, it is very easy to completely remove the status of a heresy from Messalianism and turn it into a full-fledged religion.

If the schism between Orthodoxy and Catholicism is overcome, Catholicism itself becomes a heresy from Orthodoxy (like all existing Catholic heresies).

Lol, this the same religions system as CK's one. I, in the past was asking to adding culture system like in ck3, but with possibility to colapse. For example transition from Latin Gallic to french/Ocitan culture. But this was in dark past and I have not wondering how it could be implemented and my idea was ignored.

For example, when do cultures mix so much that a new culture can be identified and adopted throughout the country?

Religion plays a very important role in the game. First of all, these are the capabilities and laws of the state itself. For example, Christians and Jews formally lead an exclusively monogamous lifestyle, their rulers can only have one wife (one exception - tribal Christians can still take concubines, after the adoption of feudalism no longer exist), and Indians, pagans and Zoroastrians are polygamous. Muslim rulers can take up to four wives (moreover, this is necessary in order to be respected); they have a main (“first”) wife and three more “second” ones. All their children are legitimate and have equal rights, but there is rivalry among wives. Each of them wants to be more important and wants to see their children as the main heirs - it can even go so far that one wife kills the child of the other. Pagans, Indians and Zoroastrians may have one wife, but their rulers are allowed to take three more concubines. This is a less intrusive mechanic - it is optional, you don’t have to take concubines at all and no one will say a bad word.
Concubines have no rights; you can take any courtiers (who can refuse) and captive women (but they can no longer refuse, so you can even “steal” someone else’s wife if you capture her). The only task of a concubine is to please the ruler and give birth to his children; if desired, the ruler can easily reject any concubine and take another. There are no penalties or deterioration of relations for this. Children from concubines also have full rights to inheritance and participate in it in turn along with children from a legal wife, but there is one small unpleasant detail - they receive a weak negative modifier “Child from a concubine”, which gives -1 to diplomacy in general insignificant.

Another role of religion is relations with neighbors and their vassals. Fellow believers will receive a positive modifier to relationships, those professing one religious group (for example, Catholics and Orthodox) will receive a small negative modifier, but many special interactions such as seduction will still be available between them, and representatives of completely alien religions and heresies (more on this below) will receive a significant disadvantage to the relationship and any diplomatic influence between them will be extremely limited. Using the “tolerance” technology, you can weaken this negative modifier towards representatives of a foreign religion, but it will only work in one direction or only among representatives of your state.

One of the most important roles of religion in the game is war. The game really encourages when wars are fought with people of other faiths, and not with representatives of the same religion. Another religion in itself can become a significant reason for declaring war and allows you to select titles up to the ducal, and once every 10 years, representatives of some religions (Catholics, Muslims and reformed pagans) can declare a crusade (jihad, great holy war) against enemy lands , after victory in which entire kingdoms are taken away from the enemy (one of the few ways). On the other hand, if you play for a small state, and there are strong neighbors of other religions around you, then there is a way out to accept their religion. This will greatly reduce aggression and casus belli on their part. For example, the armies of holy orders, whose power is very impressive, will not attack their coreligionists at all, even if they are hired by the ruler who is fighting with them. But you should not forget that it is not easy to just accept someone else’s religion - this will greatly outrage all vassals and courtiers. For a smoother transition to another religion and to prepare the ground for this, there are secret communities, but more on that below. If the vassal is of a different faith, then you can demand that he accept the main religion of the state. He will agree to this if he respects his overlord.

All religions have moral authority, depending on the control of sacred places (five provinces that are sacred for one religion or another, some of them “separate” two different religions, and only one can control, which spurs wars), the numbers and titles of believers, victories in holy wars and crusades. A religion with high moral authority is readily adopted by all districts and is accepted by other rulers. In this way, you can shake up some religion that is of little significance in reality and discover how all your neighbors accept it in the hope of protection. A religion with low moral authority is not respected, it is reluctantly accepted, and most importantly, it gives rise to heresies among some religions.

Heresies are branches from the “parent” religion, which are formed as a result of a decrease in its moral authority. The parent religion hates them fiercely, along with people of other faiths, but if the heresy becomes more widespread, it will take the form of a full-fledged religion, and the parent religion will already be considered a heresy. The possibilities of heresies can either differ significantly from the possibilities of the parent religion, or be almost identical to it. For example, the Cathar heresy allows women to take a full position in the hierarchy. Other heresies may not differ so significantly. As already mentioned, not all religions have heresies. The Christian religious group, the Muslim, the Jews and Zoroastrianism have them. Indian religions have no heresies. All pagans do not have a full-fledged heresy, with one exception - after the reformation of paganism into an organized religion, its old version becomes a “heresy”.
